Why you’ll be wild about Soursop too!

By Lainie ‘Sevante’ Wulkan

In 2019, when the first The Food Healing Oracle Deck® was in the process of being written, we knew we wanted to include exotic and lesser known foods as way to expand the vast wisdom of Mother Nature across the globe. Soursop came up over and over as a super promising fruit because of its known health benefits in island regions worldwide. When our deck was published, Soursop became our “Miracles” card and has generated conversation ever since.

Soursop originated in Central and South American as well as the Caribbean. It grows very well in Hawaii and has been incorporated there into many recipes. Completely hard to describe its taste, but imagine a blend of pineapple, with its tart and sour notes (hence the name) as well as infusions of strawberry and apple. It’s as unique tasting as it is looking. From the outside it looks rather ominous with its rough exterior. Yet, inside it exhibits a whole new feel and taste. In the states, you can get it fresh, particularly in Florida. Other parts may find it in the International or Cultural sections of the supermarket, mostly in the freezer section under its other known names, Graviola (Annona muricata), Guanabana, Custard Apple and Brazilian Paw Paw.

Personally, I love it and enjoy daily both frozen Soursop and an island formulated Soursop Superfood Protein Powder which I discovered and love, love, love.

As our “Miracles” card, I envision a day of miracles when I drink my smoothie and hold that intention with faith and devotion, reminding myself that every day is a miracle and it invokes a huge sense of gratitude in my spirit.

As we say in our smoothie book, “intend & blend” to start your day on a high vibrational path. Soursop holds the intention to let go and allow the Universe to work its magic.

So what makes this exotic fruit, which is seemingly becoming more and more mainstream these days so healthy? For those in the wellness fields, what usually comes to mind is the research studies done in Cancer prevention. That’s a big deal and the multiple studies continue to show huge promise in the fight against one of the most prolific health challenges of our time.

The National Institute of Health published a study indicating that Soursop has over 212 phytochemical ingredients in graviola extracts prepared from different plant parts. The specific bioactive constituents responsible for the major anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and other health benefits of graviola include different classes of annonaceous acetogenins, alkaloids, flavonoids, sterols, and others. If the scientific terms throw ya, don’t let it. If you looked up all these different aspects in your body, you’d see that these components all are working to make your body better and apparently, soursop has proven its merit in that regard.

Fortunately, Soursop assists other ailments as well. Another study showed that soursop (aka A.muricata‘s) activities were shown to include anticancer (25%), antiulcer (17%), antidiabetic (14%), antiprotozoal (10%), antidiarrhea (8%), antibacterial (8%), antiviral (8%), antihypertensive (6%), and wound healing (4%).

When it comes to inflammation in the body, the first mode of defense is to reduce the free radicals which are unstable atoms that damage cells and cause disease and aging. Many avenues cause free radicals. But, one of the best crushers of free radicals are increasing your antioxidants. Fortunately one of many studies have found that soursop reduces oxidative stress too.

Lastly, one of the other major challenges facing many today is brain health – ie Alzheimers , Dementia and other forms of memory loss such as amnesia. Soursop was studied and once again showed promise which is a huge plus for this major concern afflicting nearly 6 million Americans with Alzheimers alone and a whopping 24 million worldwide.

If you are ready to give this miracle fruit a try, below are some suggestions to start your journey of utilizing food as medicine. As the iconic Greek Physician Hippocrates has said (nearly 2000 years ago in year 440 BC) “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” I believe the time has come to take a notice of these foods that Mother Nature has so gracefully provided and start living off the and as intended, naturally and ethically.
